Lyle Guitars was a brand name of guitars sold in the United States during the 1960’s, 70’s, and through the early 80’s by the L.D. Tutmarc designed and produced the Serenader electric bass in 1947, which appeared in the 1948 music catalog of L.D. Paul Tutmarc was the inventor of the first “modern” electric bass in the 1930’s, which was designed to be played like a guitar. Heater of Portland Oregon as an early seller of the new “talking machines.” Music Trades Volume 56, published in 1918, mentions L.D. Heater) was born about 1913 in Portland, Oregon and died Februin Portland (verify). Heater was manager of the Portland office for the Columbia Graphophone Company, selling Alexander Graham Bell’s “talking machine.” His wife was Lenore Heater, the mother of Lyle DeLoss Heater. Heater (the elder) was born about 1884 (or 1880?) in Iowa (needs verification). was at one time a owned subsidiary of Norlin Musical Instruments, the same company which also owned Gibson Guitars in the 1970’s and 80’s.

Public records show that the company did not renew its registration and was dissolved in 1986. Heater Music Company was a registered business in Oregon. By 1971, the company had moved from downtown Portland to Beaverton, a local suburb. They offered many music products and instruments, notably guitars, violins, and other string and brass instruments. In the 60's Heater was owned by Norlin, the same company that owned Gibson. I actually have a newspaper article from the 40's at home about the company. They were value instruments that allowed a kid like me without much money to have a nicer instrument to play. I worked in a music store in Portland when I was younger and I just counted, I owned four Lyle guitars over the years, I still own one. Here are three current auctions for the same instrument with different trim and brand name: There are generally a dozen or so for sale. Weekly they fail to sell on eBay with many brand names and some with no brand name. We have one member that had one of these as his first mandolin and says it served him well.
They were laminated as far as I've ever seen. These were brought in from Japan and Korea for decades with different brand names on them. Over the years they imported a whole lot of instruments with that brand name on it, some interesting and some not so interesting. He might still be running it I don't know, I no longer live in the area. Lyle Heater ran the company through the late 50's and 60's, and well into the 70's. Any information would be greatly appreciated, thank you.Lyle is a brand name that was owned by the L.D. What I can't find is wether it is solid, laminate, or hybrid. I found that it has a spruce top, maple back and sides, and maple neck w/rosewood fretboard. I have recently bought a Lyle LM-200 mandolin, and have found very little information on the instrument's construction.
